Abstract

The orientation control using reactios wheels as actuators is one of the most popular forms to stabilize and reject external disturbances in aerospace devices. From the controlled change of angular momentum rate using, for example, a reaction wheel it is possible to control the oscilation and direction rate in rigid bodies in space. Studies show that the reaction wheel pendulum can be controlled either by linear and nonlinear controllers, however in both cases it is going to happen the actuator saturation. Thus, the goal of this master´s thesis is to investigate and analyse better control techniques to solve or alleviate the prolem involving the reaction wheel saturation. Nevertheless, it will be studied ways to control the orientation in distant locations of the equilibrium points, in situations where it is not possible to use linearized models. In addition, it will be also analysed change in the mechanical of the reaction wheel pendulum, how to add a second reaction wheel or cause the system to display gyroscopic torque, for example, taking the reaction wheel out of the plane to verify wheter these changes can bring benefits to the orientation control. This project presents a description of motivation, contributions, objectives and schecule for evaluation and funding request. (AU)
