Abstract This research intends to examine the possibilities of integration of infrastructure urban equipments to the metropolis, through the designs of the subway stations in São Paulo. The analysis of the metropolis intends to comprehend its spatial and cultural reflections on the demands of the contemporary architecture production. Through the subway station designs, the limits between architecture and infrastructure systems are examined, as we seek to evaluate the integration of the equipment to the urban space in the metropolitan scale of the mobility system, and local scale, of the street and neighborhood. Inaugurated in the 1970's, the subway of São Paulo is still expanding its net and the connection with trains system, though intermodal terminals. The research selects six stations as case studies, distributed in three categories, in order to compose a wide range of urban contexts and designs scales: 1- Downtown stations in squares, 2- Intermodal stations in great equipments and 3- Stations set in bridge structures, at a limit situation related to the context's geography. The selection of stations of five different lines enables the confrontation of these equipment production along the time, overpassing the dimension of the urban planning, in the station's urban region, and constructive, through the spaces processes and politics of building, design, materiality and composition. The analysis of the selected stations will allow the identification of design strategies that supported scale transitions, from the transportation system as a compound, to the station designs in connection to the city's public space, that overcome usual stations and terminals characteristics suggesting new relations between architecture and metropolis.
