Lip cancer: anatomopathological and clinical profile of patients treated in a General Hospital

Abstract

Lip cancer (LC) corresponds to 25 to 30% of oral neoplasms, which represents, in some series, 20% of malignant tumors of upper airways and aerodigestive tract. The incidence of oral cavity cancer for Brazil, in 2016, is 11.140 for men and 4.350 for women. LC occurs mostly in men, white and after the sixth decade. Cumulative sun exposure and the use of tobacco are the main risk factors for development of lip cancer. Squamous cell carcinoma is the most common type and develops frequently in the vermillion of the lower lip. Clinical suspicion is simple and its confirmation must come through a biopsy of the lesion. After confirmed, LC's choice treatment is surgery. Radiotherapy can be used after the resection of the tumor. This will be a retrospective study, which will include patients diagnosed with lip cancer, confirmed by anatomopathological analysis, treated by the Head and Neck surgical team, reference in the Vale do Paraíba, operated between January of 2008 and December of 2014. The aim of this study is to evaluate the clinical and anatomopathological profile of these patients, in view of its high prevalence and incidence in our country and the lack of researches about it in the region of Vale do Paraíba, the site of our study.
