Abstract

The ongoing changes in electrical energy distribution systems are partially driven by the interest in adopting renewable and alternative energies, such as photovoltaic generation and electric vehicles. With respect to photovoltaic generators, the global installed capacity has exceeded 230 GW, while in the case of plug-in electric vehicles global sales have exceeded 1 million units, with around 500,000 units sold in 2015. In spite of the unquestionable potential benefits provided by these technologies, the uncertainties and intermittencies introduced by such agents result in challenges for the operation and planning of distribution networks. This occurs mainly due to the lack of flexibility of distribution systems. In parallel with the development of these emerging technologies, energy storage systems have experienced advances, especially in the case of electrochemical batteries due to their use in electric vehicles. This technology has the potential to add flexibility to distribution systems, enabling a higher penetration of photovoltaic generators and electric vehicles, maximizing their benefits. Therefore, from scientific and technological perspectives, the objective of this research project consists in developing applications for energy storage technologies, with focus on the electrochemical battery-based technologies, in the context of electrical energy distribution systems with high penetration of photovoltaic generation and electric vehicles. With respect to the international research center and supervisor, it can be highlighted that Dr. Bala Venkatesh, full professor at Ryerson University and Academic Director of the Centre for Urban Energy (CUE), leads the largest Canadian research network studying energy storage applications for electrical energy systems, named NSERC Energy Storage Technology Network (NEST). This 5-year project encompasses the participation of 27 leading researchers, 15 universities and 26 Canadian companies, utilities and government agencies. Furthermore, CPFL Energia Group will provide financial support for the internship of one master and one PhD student, supervised by this proponent, in the CUE to enforce the collaboration between these research groups. Thus, from the strategic viewpoint, these facts increase the chances of successfully accomplishing this project and of implementing a long-term scientific and technological collaboration between the universities, research centers and Brazilian and Canadian productive sectors. In fact, this long-term collaboration is the main strategic objective of this proposal. (AU)
