Abstract

The main objective of this research is to identify, to describe and to analyze the formal and non-formal uses of commas in 232 texts selected from the Banco de Dados de Escrita do Ensino Fundamental II (developed from a financed project by FAPESP 2013/14546-5). The texts were produced by 58 students through Junior High School from a public school. The central hypothesis is: Brazilian Portuguese prosodic characteristics, specifically those related to prosodic constituents borders, motivate both the presence and the lack of commas in written texts. The research seems to contribute to investigations about the non-dichotomy relation, but constitutive, between speech and writing from the comma uses. By being a longitudinal study which there are no works in the field of language studies, the analysis of comma uses will allow: (i) to compare comma uses tendencies to the beginning and the final years of Junior High School; (ii) to identify if prosodic constituents borders useful to characterize the comma uses in the initial years allow and/or change in texts of the final years, (iii) to characterize the so-called comma process of acquisition.
