Abstract

Through wall paintings with female representations, mainly found in tombs of the city of Tarquinia, this project aims to verify the context in relation to female gender in Etruria. For this goal will be considered the paintings themselves and even texts of the time referring to the Etruscan society. The primary sources mentioned here are the authors of antiquity, Greeks and Romans, who presented their testimonies about the Etruscans, accentuating aspects of customs that were causing strangeness to them, foreigners. This oddity was caused by the autonomy of women and the activities that they exercised outside the domestic environment, place primarily feminine. We intend, therefore, to analyze through the art the female role in the Etruscan society and thus contribute to a better understanding of this culture that has contributed massively to the Roman culture and, consequently, Western culture.
