Abstract

High dependency of oil derived chemicals and fuels, and jeopardize of oil depletion in recent future have stimulated research for developing of new products and processes. In this context, biomass represents a sustainable alternative for energy and liquid fuel production, and for manufacturing other value-added products. Gamma-valerolactone (GVL), which can be obtained from lignocellulosic feedstock, stands as a potential fuel additive and as a green and low toxic alternative for traditional solvents, such as acetonitrile and sulfolane. Performance evaluation of solvents for a particular use requires an understanding of liquid-liquid equilibrium of compounds in mixture. Even though GVL presents very favorable characteristics for its usage as a sustainable liquid, few information about phase equilibria and particularly, about liquid-liquid equilibria (LLE) of systems containing this molecule, is available in the literature. Therefore, this project aims at determining experimental data of liquid-liquid equilibria of mixtures containing gamma-valerolactone + hydrocarbon + oxygenated compounds, and at correlating these results using different thermodynamic approaches for activity coefficients, such as: molecular models, group contribution methods, and F-SAC (Functional-Segment Activity Coefficient) model, which is based on COSMO-RS (COnductor-like Screening MOdel for Real Solvents). This project convers the study of LLE of one binary mixture (GVL + n-tetradecane) at different temperatures, and of four ternary mixtures (GVL + n-tetradecane + butanoic acid or hexanoic acid or triacetin or ethyl/methyl myristate) at 25 ºC.
