Abstract

Chronic musculoskeletal disorders are a public health problem due to its high prevalence, high economic cost and negative impact on patients and their relatives quality of life. Due to this, researchers have been studying muscle injury in animal models to better understand the mechanisms involved in the initiation and maintenance of musculoskeletal disturbs. Our research group is focused on pain and nociception field using animal models. In an attempt to elucidate the nociceptive mechanisms involved in these processes, we use pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in acute and chronic, muscular or neuropathic injuries seeking for effective therapies. The aim of this study is to assess whether the treatment with gabapentin is effective in reversing the nociceptive effect induced by chronic myositis through the injection of Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA) in the gastrocnemius muscle of rats. Furthermore, we aim to analyse if gabapentin has any influence on the action of calcium channels voltage-dependent, glial cells and pro-and anti-inflammatory cytokines in the peripheral and central nervous system (dorsal root ganglia and thalamus) in animals with chronic myositis-induced.
