Abstract

An e-tongue is a multisensory system that can characterize liquid samples using statistical tools. Various e-tongues have been reported with numerous applications, recently also incorporating the concept of microfluidics. So far, we have worked with regular polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microfluidic devices and started a few developments with 3D-printing technology both using e-tongue systems for soil analysis (ongoing studies). However, we are yet to build (and investigate) a full-3D-printed microfluidic e-tongue prototype due to limitations imposed by the fused deposition modeling (FDM) 3D printing process, a commonly used 3D printing technology. We strongly believe that this goal can be achieved by taking advantage of the University of Pennsylvania's 3D printing infrastructure, which includes state-of-the-art added-manufacturing technologies thus enabling the development of 3D-printed devices for e-tongue systems and other applications.
