Abstract

This research aims to sign and analyse The Treatise of Natural Law by Tomás Antonio Gonzaga. The date in which it was written is uncertain, but it is believed to be around 1769 and 1777, which were the year that Tomás Antonio Gonzaga began to attend Coimbra Law University and the year of "Viradeira", respectively. This theory emerged due to a dedication written by Tomás Antonio Gonzaga to Marquês do Pombal. This research aims to study the concept of love, bound to justice, as was developed by Tomás Antonio Gonzaga within his work, in which such feeling is seen as a form of approaching God's Law and abiding by it.Furthermore, this paper aims to analyse how this concept reflects the "pombalino" period, considering that it is a transitional period where divergent ideas circulated and policy options were not defined.
