Effect of postprandial lipemia on biochemical profile of healthy dogs fed with premium commercial food

Abstract

Lipemia is among the main causes of rejection of samples in veterinary clinical laboratories, interfering with biochemical determinations obtained by spectrophotometry. However, it is not known if such interferences cause clinically errors of interpretation in routine canine biochemical determinations, especially important when considering that lipemia can not always be avoided in the veterinary routine. This is the second in a series of studies that will evaluate the effect of lipemia on canine biochemical parameters and the present work will evaluate the effect of postprandial lipemia on the routine biochemical determinations of healthy dogs fed with premium commercial feed. Fifteen healthy dogs will be selected, the peak of postprandial hypertriglyceridemia will be determined in the first study (Proc. 2017 / 02641-4, under analysis) and this time will be used to induce postprandial lipemia in the present study in the same animals, comparing these values with two non-lipemic moments: one day before induction of lipemia and one day after induction, always at the same time of day as the collection of the lipemic sample and after a 12-hour fast. The biochemical analyzes will be performed in an automated spectrophotometer using a set of commercial reagents. The variables will be tested for normality and will be used t-test or Wilcoxon tests to verify the differences between the groups.
