Abstract

Sexual maturation, which progresses with different speeds between individuals and sexes, occurs during adolescence and is accompanied by changes in several other physiological processes such as sleep profile and chronotype. The gold standard for assessing sexual maturity is Tanner's staging carried out by clinical evaluation. This evaluation can also be done by self-assessment, although the methods used for this are not internationally standardized and are rarely described in scientific papers, resulting in variable correspondences with the evaluation done by clinician. The objective of the present study is to develop standardized instructions to aid self-assessment using the Tanner scale, to compare the staging thus obtained with clinical evaluations, with the self-assessment without detailed instructions, as well as to relate these stagings to pubertal development using another self-assessment scale, the Pubertal Development Scale, to be adapted for local use. We also intend to associate pubertal development with demographic characteristics and chronotype changes with the Puberty and Phase Preference Scale. The participants will be 100 consecutive adolescents (aged 10-16 years) attended a Center for Assistance and Support to Adolescence. Young people will be approached in the waiting room and pseudorandomly allocated into two groups (apart from balancing by sex): Tanner's self-assessment with detailed instruction and self-assessment without such instructions. After completing the scales the youngsters will be examined as part of their consultations. Staging determined by trained physicians will be contrasted to responses of the youngsters. (AU)
