Abstract

The objective of this research is to understand the different forms of territorio usage, carried out by financial capital, which allow this type of speculative capital to appropriate agricultural land in Brazilian territory. This phenomenon has been studied by a wide range of researchers and intellectuals linked to international social movements, who conceptualize it by the term of "land grabbing" (BORRAS JR, et al, 2011, 2012, MCMICHAEL, 2012, 2009, COTULA, 2015; FAIRBAIRN, 2014, 2015). The occurrence of land grabbing in Brazilian territory takes place in several localities, but especially in the region known as "MATOPIBA" (region between the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia), being implement by speculation companies of real estate in agricultural land, such as "Radar Propiedades Agrícolas S/A". From this, we propose to develop a geographic analysis of the land grabbing phenomenon in Brazil as suggested by Ouma (2014), who proposes an analysis "from the productive regions to the financial market", that is, an analysis "below rather than from above". We hope, with this proposal, to identify how certain agents and financial logics (national and global) have been changing pre-existing regional productive arrangements (situations of "horizontalities"), constituting themselves as "verticalities" in the regions, imposed on local groups by global hegemonic anonymous societies (SANTOS, 2009).
