Abstract

The emergence of Web 2.0 and the progress of technologies for sharing and managing projects have promoted, in recent years, the growth of subtitle translation practice by fans, also known as fansubbing. With a high demand of audiovisual content consumed by Brazilian users, groups of amateur translators, known in Brazil as legenders, have become organized, specialized and created research methods for subtitling that have earned them a relevant space amongst consumers of movies and TV shows in English language. In light of this scenario, based on interviews with legenders and consumers of their subtitles, as well as the analysis a corpus of translated subtitles of thirteen episodes of US TV drama Grey's Anatomy, which casts highly complex medical terminology, this study aims to examine this subtitling practice taken as "amateur" comparing it to officially released subtitles. The goal is to promote a theoretical reflection about practical aspects of the collaborative translation, analyzing how group work articulation and the studied translation strategies may be applied for educational purposes in training professional translators.
