Abstract

Excessive salt intake has been associated with the development or worsening of chronic diseases, including hypertension. Spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), an animal model for the study of primary hypertension, show an increased preference for sodium when compared to normotensive strains. The lateral parabrachial nucleus (LPBN) is an important inhibitory mechanism for sodium intake control and it is involved in cardiovascular control. However, the LPBN contribution to sodium appetite and cardiovascular control is still unknown in SHR. Therefore, the aim of present study is to evaluate cardiovascular parameters and sodium appetite in SHR after the blockade or activation of LPBN. We will investigate sodium and water ingestive behavior, cardiovascular and biochemistry parameters after bilateral administration of moxonidine (alfa2 adrenergic/imidazoline receptors agonist), RX 821002 (alfa2 adrenergic receptors antagonist) or vehicle into the LPBN. Therefore, present study aims to clarify the importance of the LPBN to the hydro mineral balance and cardiovascular control in an animal model of essential hypertension. (AU)
