Abstract

Background: Nursing assistance regarding people with suicidal behavior is essential to saving lives and is influenced by the professionals experiences, perceptions and attitudes, which are strongly associated with professional training. Aim: To investigate, among Portuguese nursing graduates, the meaning, experiences and attitudes toward suicidal behavior. Method: Mixed study that will be developed in a higher education institution of Coimbra - Portugal. Nursing graduates enrolled from the 5th semester will be eligible. The study was approved by the Ethics Research Comitee in Portugal. In the quantitative stage of the study, the eligible population will be invited to respond to the Suicide Behavior Questionnaire and a sociodemographic questionnaire. These data will be submitted to descriptive analysis, correlation test, mean comparison test and logistic regression. In the qualitative stage of the study, the participants will be selected by theoretical sampling to participate in semi-structured audio-recorded interview. For the analysis of the qualitative data will be adopted methodological procedures of the Theory Grounded in the Data and theoretical assumptions of Symbolic Interactionism. Expected results: The study will fill a gap in knowledge about suicide experiences, meanings and attitudes related to suicide among nursing undergraduates, which will extend the understanding of needs, potentialities, facilitating elements, limits of academic training on suicide, as well as on the evaluation of experiences and educational strategies regarding suicide. Thus, the results of the present study may provide support for the planning of academic training strategies and psychosocial support for students, contributing to and improving qualification for assistance.
