Abstract

This study will assess the effect of the atherosclerosis in the development of apical periodontitis in Wistar rats with endodontic infection. It will be used 40 Wistar rats divided into 4 groups of 10 animals each: control rats (C); rats with endodontic infection (EI); rats with atherosclerosis (AT); rats with AT and EI (AT + EI). Atherosclerosis will be induced by a mooring held around the carotid artery, 1,5cm of its bifurcation and the internal diameter of the stenosis is 0,3mm in diameter. The animals in groups AT and AT+EI will receive one day after surgery, a dose of vitamin D3 (6x105 UI. Kg-1), intraperitoneally, for two days and will be fed with high fat diet. After 30 days of induction of atherosclerosis, EI will be induced by exposing the pulp chamber of the upper first molar to the oral medium. After another 30 days the rats will be killed and the jaws will be processed laboratory for evaluation in light microscopy. Histological and histometric analysis of periapical lesions will be performed. The results obtained will be analyzed from the statistical point of view with significance level of 5% (p <0.05).
