Abstract

Poultry industry stands out in agriculture and livestock world scenario for its high productivity and technification. In order to reach these productive levels, the animals frequently undergo stressful management conditions, which results is the activation of the Hypothalamic-Hypophysis-Adrenal axis and the Sympathetic Nervous System, leading to behavioral, nervous and immunological changes. In face of stressful microbial and intestinal challenges, it is observed an increase in corticosterone, adrenaline and noradrenaline levels and in the production of cytokines such as IL1, IL6 and LITAF. These mediators act in the Central Nervous System altering neural activity in both acute and chronic phases of an inflammatory reaction, leading to the expression of altered behaviors and in the reduction of the overall immunity of the animals. The objective of the present work is to evaluate the effects of an intravenous exposure to Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide on the behavioral, neural and immune parameters of broilers. Thus, using a pharmacological tool (LPS) is intended to clarify neuroimmune events that accompany infectious processes of birds. (AU)
