Abstract

This project aims to investigate the use of the definite article before anthroponyms in varieties of Brazilian Portuguese. The research will follow the theoretical framework of the Minimalist Program (Chomsky 1995), and use methodological tools of labovian base variationist sociolinguistics. The hypothesis to be defended by the project, along the lines proposed in Longobardi (1994), it is that the dialects of the Northeast to be considered in the investigation have the possibility of raising "N-to-D" in the syntactic computation needed to shunt noun phrases with proper names. According to this hypothesis, the same operation is absent in the relevant Southeast dialects. The surface effect of syntactic contrast between the two sets of varieties is the trend to non-realization of the article with proper names in the Northeast and, in opposition, the realization of the article in the same type of context in the Southeast dialects.
