The variation absence vs. presence of a definite article before anthroponyms is perhaps one of the syntactic characteristics of Brazilian Portuguese most readily identifiable as being of a regional character. Since the analysis carried out by Callou & Silva (1997) with data from NURC project until today, several authors have already studied this phenomenon of Portuguese syntax and which places the Brazilian variety in a privileged place of research, since most of the languages of the world are divided into categorically rejecting the articles in this context (such as English and French) or demanding the presence of articles (such as Catalan and Greek). Thus, based on a generative theoretical framework - more specifically in the Minimalist version of the Theory of Principles and Parameters (Chomsky, 1995, 2001 and following) - and using the tools of the Labovian sociolinguistics, this research intends to investigate synchronously the syntax of the noun phrases with proper names in two diatopic varieties of Brazilian Portuguese. Following the same methodology as the NURC project, a corpus was elaborated based on sociolinguistic interviews in six Brazilian cities - three in the Northeast and three in the Southeast - in order to outline the current state of this variation in Portuguese. The main question that permeates this research is to determine, from the data obtained by speakers from two regions of Brazil, which are the syntactic mechanisms that would be behind this variation as well as the characteristics that favor or inhibit the realization of the article and, from that , investigate whether there would be evidence of a change in progress. The results suggested that there are in fact two different grammars in Brazilian Portuguese with regard to the functioning of noun phrases with anthroponyms: a system in which the absence appears to be categorical and another in a process of change to implement the mandatory presence of the article. Drawing a parallel between the findings from the statistical tests and the diachronic syntax of the Romance languages, this change can be explained as still being a consequence of the major syntactic restructuring caused by the loss of Latin morphological cases (AU) | |
