Abstract

Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUDT) is associated with a series of clinical signs related to the feline bladder and/or urethra inflammation and is a very frequent cause of clinical care in feline medicine. Despite the great number of studies, there is stil a lot of discussion regarding its pathogenesis, with questioning from its nomenclature to treatment. Among the most common clinical signs and laboratorial changes described, we can list dysuria, stranguria, periuria, hematuria and pain, with or without obstruction. Besides azotemia, hyperkalemia and acid-base balance disorders, glycosuria is a common finding in cats with FLUDT. The hypotheses for the occurrence of glycosuria are stress hyperglycemia, concurrent diabetes mellitus, tubular lesion due to an increased retrograde urinary pressure and post renal glycosuria related to the hematuria. Until now no controlled study has evaluated these hypotheses. The aim of this study is to investigate the glycemic state and the tubular function of cats with FLUTD to establish the pathogenesis of glycosuria in these animals. 20 cats with obstructive FLUDT will be prospectively evaluated. The animals will be clinically evaluated and urinalysis, urinary GGT, blood glucose, fructosamine and glycated hemoglobin will be performed. The results of the animals with FLUDT with and without glycosuria will be quali and quantitatively analyzed and compared to each other and to a healthy control group by ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis accordingly to the variables distribution at a level of 5% of significance.
