Euphorbiaceae is one of the largest families within Angiosperms, with about 6300 species in more than 250 genera, an extraordinary morphological diversity and wide geographical distribution. Crotoneae, one of the largest tribes within the family, has undergone significant changes in its delimitation after the recent phylogenetic hypothesis, and it now comprehends, besides the giant Croton, other five small genera: Acidocroton (incl. Ophellantha), Astraea, Brasiliocroton, Sagotia and Sandwithia. Morphological characters, both vegetative and reproductive, are very diversified in the tribe, especially in Croton that includes 1200 species representing the greatest morphological diversity within Crotoneae. Most lineages of Crotoneae are found in the New World, with the exception of the Old World Croton species, which are all in C. subg. Croton. Great advances in the taxonomy and systematics of Croton have been published, and additional studies with Astraea and Brasiliocroton are also in development. Regarding the other genera, Sagotia and Sandwithia were recently revised, but out of the context of Crotoneae and an important gap in the knowledge of Acidocroton is evident. This project aims to gather data and build a stronger base about Crotoneae genera and to better understand phylogenetic relationships, geographical distribution and morphological diversity of Astraea within Crotoneae. Additionally, the project includes visits to important herbaria to analyze type collections of names linked to Astraea. (AU)
