Abstract

Atmospheric General Circulation Models are important tools for studying variability and climate change. These models are also able to simulate the past climate, which provides a great opportunity to validate and investigate whether the changes designed for the future have already occurred or not in the past. Despite the great advances observed in climate modeling, several studies show that there is still a discrepancy in the simulation of the precipitation and position of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). In this context, the main objective of this project is to evaluate and identify the mechanisms that control the position of the Atlantic ITCZ, in the context of the total energy balance and transient effects, in simulations of climate models for the past. For this, methods will be used to determine the position of the ITCZ based on the atmospheric equatorial energy balance and the precipitation maxima of the tropical region of the Atlantic Ocean. Causality methods will also be applied in order to understand what causes the changes observed in the ITCZ in each past period. The effect of the highest frequency transients will be investigated in partnership with the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (France) in the form of a sandwich doctorate.
