Abstract

This research intends to investigate, in a comparative perspective, subjectivation processes inscribed in and produced by biographies and autobiographies elaborated and planned by transexual people and published in Brazil and in the United States of America. Facing the consolidation of the trans movement in different ways in both countries, the increasingly visible engagement of transexual people in disputes for access to rights, identity recognition and protagonism in narratives about transexuality, as well as the profusion of biographies and autobiographies of transexual people being published in recent years, some questions arise: in what way, in two very distinct national, editorial and sociopolitical contexts, the inscription in book of trajectories and subjectivities produces meanings of transexual personhood, and what are the implications of the articulations of social markers of difference such as gender, sexuality, class and race in this process? How these meanings relate to other knowledges and discursive regimes, like the biomedical and psychological ones and those produced by the State and the media? What are the power relations that permeate the books and their repercussions, and in what way they organize political positions and experiences? Through document analysis, in-depth interviews and ethnographic practice, I intend to answer these questions and analytically explore the truth regimes involved in the processes of apprehension, constitution and writing of the self, the elaboration, reproduction and confrontation of gender norms, as well as the tensions and interweavings between narratives about experience and political subjectivity.
