Abstract

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a versatile and opportunistic human pathogen with an exceptional ability to adapt to antimicrobial therapy. In addition, P. aeruginosa infections are a major cause of hospital infections and pneumonia, with a high mortality rate among people with compromised immune systems. Thus, it is extremely important to develop rapid and simple analytical tools to assist in the detection and monitoring of this kind of infection, especially in centers lacking laboratory infrastructure and with high clinical demand. Chemical sensing on paper-based platforms has emerged in recent years as a versatile analytical tools for in-situ analysis of vital parameters and clinical monitoring of relevant species to human health, especially in poor or distant from large urban centers, which meets the proposal of this project: the development of a paper-based electrochemical sensor able to detect and monitor the bacterial infection by Pseudomonas aeruginosa using minimally invasive biological samples such as saliva or sputum.
