Abstract

Melatonin, the hormone responsible for carrying the photoperiodic information to the body, transmits data on the variations in light intensity that occurs during the days and nights throughout the year, allowing the body to respond with changes adaptive to the changes of the environment. It also regulates various cellular functions, such as modulation of humoral and cell type immunity, glucose and insulin metabolism control in adipose tissue, action on neuronal activity in the hippocampus, action on vascular tone, regulation of reproductive function in mammals. In humans, researchers have shown that melatonin is more than three-fold increased in follicular fluid than in the bloodstream, suggesting the influence of this hormone on follicular maturation. In addition, rat ovarian granulosa cells express the type I and II melatonin receptors and estrogen-dependent action in the culture medium, and may have a stimulatory or inhibitory action on cyclic AMP, modulating intracellular metabolism. However, little is known about its action on granulosa cells in women with infertility mainly the molecular mechanisms involved. For this reason, we are conducting this study to evaluate the pathways of action of melatonin on granulosa cells of ovaries of women with infertility by molecular biology studies involving several signaling pathways such as angiogenesis.
