Abstract

Brazilian medium-sized cities have experienced, since the 1950s, a dispersed spatial growth, that is, discontinuous territorial growth. This model of urbanization, found mainly in US cities, changes all urban dynamics on a local and regional scale and negatively impacts society, the environment and the economy. The objective of this study is to analyze the phenomenon of dispersed urbanization in the Urban Agglomeration of Piracicaba, located in the interior of the state of São Paulo, and how this phenomenon is closely related to the new forms of spatial mobility of the population, stimulated by automobiles use and the generation of a regionalized daily life. This research is linked to the thematic project "Observatory of Migrations in São Paulo" (Contemporary Internal and International Migrations in the state of São Paulo), FAPESP 2014/04850-1, aiming to contribute to the studies of the relation between the new patterns of population distribution in the territory and the mobility. Also it aims to advance the studies on the subject, stimulating new research and proposing solutions for urban planning focused on the new patterns of contemporary urbanization. (AU)
