Abstract

Evaluating the size of populations is essential for conservation. However, monitoring the population density of some species can be challenging because of its elusiveness. In these cases, indirect methods for density estimates are used, including the fecal pellet count methods such as Fecal Standing Crop (FSC). This method considers the species daily defecation rate and the pellet persistence to estimate population density. Thus, the objective of this project is to define basic parameters for using the FSC method with certain confidence in the population estimate of elusive species. Therefore, it is proposed to obtain the daily defecation rates and the feces persistence time in the environment for several species of Mazama genus. To estimate these parameters, animals in captivity will be observed, in order to obtain the number of daily defecation. The persistence time of the pellets will be estimated by the disposal and observation of 120 fecal samples covering different environments. For greater efficiency in the search for feces, it is used a scat-detection dog. Therefore, an experiment will be conducted to calculate the detection efficiency of the dog. This work is expected to obtain the specific daily defecation rate for Mazama, as well as the persistence time of the feces in the environment, and the dog's search efficiency, so that it is possible to outline the basic parameters for using the FSC method in density studies.
