Abstract

The electric power distribution systems are experiencing significant changes due to the integration of new technologies, such as photovoltaic solar generators, electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and smart meters. Due to the high complexity of this new condition, there is a critical need for more efficient practices of distribution systems management. Among the management practices that needs improvement is the fault location, which aims to accurately indicate the location of a short circuit (fault) allowing the system to be recovered as soon as possible. In this context, this research project proposes the investigation of the use of data potentially available with the modernization of the distribution systems in fault location process. The main objective of this research is to investigate improvements in a fault location methodology focused on distribution systems. Among the studies and improvements proposed in this work, it can be highlighted: the evaluation of the possibility of improving the load current estimation using measurements from smart meters; decreasing the search space of the fault location, reducing the number of simulations required; and evaluating the effect of measurement errors on the accuracy of the results.
