Abstract

John Rogers Commons was one of the most prominent economists working in the United States in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, occupying a prominent role in the heterodox branch of economics called the Institutionalist School. Commons' reflections on modern capitalism and his attempt to create a volitional theory of value, or Reasonable Value Theory, are not only current but also sources of theoretical reflections for economic thought. From his theory of reasonable value derived from capitalist development, John Rogers Commons highlights the role of labor and its goodwill, since the author considers the latter as being the soul of a corporation. The reformist character of Commons in relation to the strengthening of labor legislation and union representation and on an organization of the capital x work relation make his work more and more current and pertinent in the discussions of current capitalist conjuncture. Such evidence on the role of labor in the economic theory of the reasonable value points to a rich theoretical source and a need to deepen an investigation of the classical approach to labor as a fundamental part of capitalist development. The present project arises from the opportunity to examine more thoroughly the theory studied in the student's work of scientific initiation, since it sought to identify how Commons perceived and incorporated the new forms of capitalist wealth in his economic theory of value.
