A proposal for an institucionalist theoretical model and its application in comparative cases

Abstract

The production of sugar and other by-products derived from sugar cane (alcohol, energy, etc.) is one of the oldest and most resilient activities in the world. Over the last three decades, it has been forced by the deregulation processes of the late 20th century to modernize and adjust to a global and competitive environment, which has produced some standardization worldwide. Despite this, profound differences persist in terms of organizational structure, dynamics and performance among global sugar producers. The project aims to develop and apply - in a comparative and institutional approach - a theoretical model inspired by the economic theory of John R. Commons to analyze the sugarcane industries in three countries, namely, Australia, Brazil and India. (AU)
