Abstract

The Brazilian Northeast economy, culture, social life and politics and in particular in the State of Alagoas are related to the sugarcane, once representing the existing dynamism and its main product. The sugarcane has been present in all moments of life in Alagoas, passing through productive processes since the banguês and mills, until the factory, central elemento in its economy, replacing old productive processes and generating the modernization of agroindustry unities, with governmental aid (IAA, PLANALSUCAR & PROÁLCOOL). Under globalization, the mills and factories are called to modernization to ensure their spaces, both at the national level and international market. This research aims to analyze and discuss the role of the sugarcane abrobusiness in Alagoas against the Techno-scientific modernization and the challenges and perspectives in times of globalization. The discussion of some categories is crucial: Alagoas' formation and development - Costa ([1929] 1983), Lima (1965), Diégues Jr. (2006a); Techno-scientific modernization - Castillo e Frederico (2010), Elias [et al.] (2013), Frederico (2011), Freitas (2016), Rossini (2016); region and sub-region - Lencioni (1992), Andrade (1998); sugarcane agrobusiness, labor force, economic development - Oliveira (2007), Martins (2010), Rangel (2012), Thomaz Jr. (2013), Freitas [et al.] (2014), Sampaio (2014); geographical milieu and globalization - Santos (1977 e [1996] 2008), Arroyo (2004), Elias (2011) among others. It can still be ponted out the interviews and questionnaire, data and information collection in official bureaus and electronic means etc. Finally, sugarcane is still the most profitable economic activity - along with its agroindustry - intensified through a modernization process since the end of the 20th century, getting prominence and ocuupying important place in the state, regional and national scenarios in times of globalization.
