Abstract

The project "Non-verbal behaviors in different regions of Brazil" is linked to the Center for Applied Research in Human Well-Being and Behavior FAPESP (Process 2014/502825). Physical appearance and its modifications are integral parts of self-presentation that significantly influence interpersonal interactions. Despite this, there is little psychological research in general and, specifically, in the Brazilian sociocultural context regarding physical appearance modifications. In this project we will focus on a modification of a specific physical appearance: use of makeup in women. The project is divided into 3 complementary phases with different methodologies. In the project as a whole, we will investigate: a) individual variation in the frequency of makeup use, b) influence of makeup on nonverbal behavior and self-perceptions of women, and c) influence of makeup on the perception of women by third parties.
