Abstract

Problem: Can satellite cells (SC) and myofibrilar protein synthesis (MPS) explain the lower muscle gains after concurrent training (CT) compared to resistance training (RT) alone? Main: to compare muscle fiber hypertrophy, number of SC and myonuclei per fiber type, and MPS after 16 weeks of CT and RT. Methods: 30 young male subjectswill be allocated in one of the following groups: concurrent training (CT, n=15) or resistance training (RT, n=15). The RT group will perform Leg press and leg extension, 2-3x8-12 maximum repetitions with 60s of rest, 2x per week. The CT group will be training four times per week. Twice per week will perform the same RT protocol followed by a running exercise twice per week. Other two training sessions the ETgroup will perform only ET. The ET will be composed by 10-15 sprints of 1-2 min at velocity of VO2max with 1 min of rest between sprints. One biopsy and one blood sample will be taken before experimental period. The subjects will undergo for 3 muscle samples, 2 blood samples, 6 saliva samples before and after the first and last training session on week four and on the week 16. Also, one muscle strength test andmaximum oxygen intake test (VO2max) and muscle cross sectional area measured by ultrasound image will be performed before and after experimental period. The datacollecting is almost finish and once the last measure was done the muscle samples will be sent to Australian Catholic University, Australia. There, the MPS (determined by²H2O) and SC analyses will be performed for the myself and for team of Professor John A. Hawley, that is an expert in both type of analyses. Thus, I believe that I have necessary conditions to understand the physiological mechanisms that can clarify why the muscle hypertrophy is smaller after CT compared RT alone.
