Abstract

The Fernando de Noronha National Marine Park is an important breeding site for several species of birds, as well as habitat for endemic reptiles. All these native species are suffering the negative impacts of the presence of invasive animals brought from the continent, as the domestic cat and the Tegu lizard (Tupinambis merianae). It is believed that extinction of the only endemic mammal from archipelago, Noronhomys vespucci, a rodent that was cited by the first europeans to arrive at the archipelago, has been due to competition or introduction of new diseases brought by invasive species, especially cats and rats. The Mabuya (Trachylepis atlantica), the endemic lizard of Fernando de Noronha is a flag-species of the archipelago and presents an imensurable biological function in this restricted and reduced environment, as it is a main pollinator reptile. Recently, the presence of a parasite from the Tegu lizard was observed in samples of Mabuya. Therefore, in an effort to avoid the extinction of one more endemic species in the archipelago, the present study was proposed. With the data obtained, the project seeks to trace management goals, suggest the most appropriated management and adequate public policies for the conservation of this endemic specie. (AU)
