Abstract

The prussian general, Carl von Clausewitz, author of the work "Vom Kriege", or "Da Guerra" in portuguese, is one of the greatest academics on the subject of war. One of his contributions is the study of the nexus between war and politics, of which the general postulates that war is a "continuation of politics by other means." Even if he lived in an important era - the period of Napoleonic wars - his reflection goes beyond schematic models, so that the historicity of the approach to war allowed interpretations by many scholars in different times and perspectives. In this century, the increasing growth of terrorist acts has raised a debate about the Clausewitzian contribution on the understanding of terrorism, in order to consider whether it follows one of his mains thoughts of being a continuation of politics by other means or a synonym of war. Thus, the objective is to test the hypothesis that war and terrorism are both political phenomena, but that cannot be equalized, given the oddness between terrorism and the Clausewitzian conceptualization of a regular war. Therefore, taking count of the relevance of the thought of one of the greatest academics of war and politics, and the fact that there is no other work in national and international literature, even in secondary German literature dedicated specifically to this research problem, there is a need to verify the possible contributions of Clausewitz on this subject.
