Abstract

Although not essential for plants the lanthanum and cerium elements, both rare earth element (REE), are used as fertilizers in different crops, manly in China. Studies about this application have demonstrated greater yield in seeds germination, productivity, greater resistance to pathogens and increase in chlorophyll content. According to the consulted literature, the benefic effects promoted for La and Ce are caused by physiologic changes as the net photosynthesis rate, higher absorption of nitrogen and phosphorus. However, to get those gains, it is already known that the application must be done in low concentration, since higher concentrations can induce phytotoxicity. In Brazilian agricultural scenario, the utilization of REE has being done unconscious with application of phosphate fertilizer that present considerable content of REE, though the conscious application it is not explored yet. A way to exploit the benefits that REE can bring would be foliar application. The goals of this study are to develop a mixture of adjuvants that improve the foliar absorption of La and Ce, to evaluate the leaf uptake of these elements and investigate how they affect plant development. For this purpose we have chosen soybean plants as model species Firstly, we will elaborate a formulation taking into a count the drying time and contact angle of applied droplets. As a second step, we will evaluate the absorption of both elements by X-ray fluorescence microanalysis in leaves of plants treated with La and Ce. Finally, in greenhouse conditions the elaborated solution will be applied to soybean plants on V3 phenological stage in sandy soil. During this step, we will perform morphological and physiological analysis until the production of grains. (AU)
