Political formation and community communication: the housing movement in Mooca

Abstract

This project aims to approach the housing movement of Quintais e Cortiços da Mooca/Associação dos Trabalhadores da Região da Mooca, in particular the activities of cultural and political formation in the process of members' renovation in a recent context of gentrification in the neighborhood. The district is characterized by the deindustrialization and intense populational loss since mid century XX; recently it suffered a process of real estate boom with the building of residential condominiums. This caused some conflicts related to its historical patrimony; besides spontaneous and informal actions in the buildings occupations and actions organized in participatory public spaces - like Plano Diretor and Operações Urbanas - by the housing movement. Firstly, we will portray the current profile of the members of Movimento Quintais da Mooca. Then we will map the activities of political and cultural formation developed by the leaders and members. In third place, we will identify the political and cultural formation of former and new members; besides the impact of the new information and communication technologies - Tecnologias da Informação e Comunicação (TICs) - and of the social networks in the social movement's communication. Finally, we will subsidize, with the perspective of the Community Public Relations, a proposal of activities of formation and communication for Movimento Quintais da Mooca, including its members in this process.
