Digital image analysis to study the Pinus elliottii wood dimensional variation

Abstract

The present project aims to determine the shrinkage and swelling properties of Pinus elliottii wood through the processing and digital analysis of images. Six sampling trees will be harvested in a commercial plantation belonging to a company from the region of Itapeva, SP. The trunks of the trees will be sectioned at the base, 3, 6 and 9m from where 5cm thick discs will be removed, to obtain two types of specimens: one in a wedge shape, proposed by the project, and another according to the NBR-71090/97 specifications. The samples will be photographed and later processed using the programs AutoCAD, Adobe PhotoShop and ImajeJ, in which the digital analysis of the images will be made, which will allow measurements of shifting and swelling of the wood in the radial and tangential directions, and then, calculate their specific deformations. The results will be compared to those obtained by conventional methods, as well as to the values found in the literature. It is hoped that the development of this study will contribute to the expansion of the use of digital image processing and analysis in the study of the physical-mechanical properties of wood. (AU)
