Abstract

In this project I defend that both risk and uncertainty exhibit a necessary entanglement between facts and values. Next, I will examine risk and uncertainty in terms of the formal properties of values. I will apply such analysis to the general idea of models as fictions, what implicates in the recognition that models of risk and uncertainty are not pure descriptions but rather evaluative descriptions with prescriptive character. Therefore, such models should indeed be value-laden fictions instead of value-free ones. Finally I propose a minimalist model of risk and uncertainty that fulfils the conceptual demands discussed above. It takes the form of a probabilistic trolley problem where the action of pulling the switch does not necessarily imply an undesirable outcome but only engenders the probability of the outcome. (AU)
