Abstract

The question of national identity arose in Europe after the French Revolution. In the Irish context, there has been ever since a great literary investment to create an Irish national identity. In this research for doctoral thesis, we believe that the relationship between literature and national identity in Ireland persists in the present day. Also, we argue that national identity is still a relevant issue in world geopolitics. Therefore, we aim to evaluate how up-to-date Irish literature (re)configures the characteristics of national identity, dialogues with tradition in a global era, and proposes new possibilities for the future of national identity. For this, we chose to analyse the Irish short story of the turn of the 21st century.
