Abstract

National identity becomes an issue in Europe after the French Revolution. In the Irish context, there has been since then, and especially in the beginning of the 20th century, a great investment by writers and literary movements to contribute to the creation of an Irish national identity. Therefore, it is possible to say that a relationship between literature and national identity is established in Ireland. This relationship has been questioned, challenged, and transformed throughout the 20th century up to the present days. In this PhD research, we believe that the relationship between literature and national identity in Ireland still persits. We aim to evaluate, however, how contemporary Irish literature (de)constructs the characteristics of Irish national identity, dialogues with tradition and envisions new possibilities for the future of national identity in Ireland. In order to do so, the short story from the turn of the 21st century was chosen as the literary genre suitable for this analysis. This is a literary genre of great importance to the Irish literary tradition. Also, by choosing to work with short stories, it will be possible to study a larger corpus of literary texts. (AU)
