Abstract

The construction of Brasília points to questions of formations of Brazil´s modern national identity, especially in the areas of art and architecture. This research starts from the formulation of the new capital city in an extended perspective: in addition to the implantation of the city as an urban and constructed reality, there is also the project of nation then intended. The relation between art and architecture, the so-called synthesis of the arts, will be one of the characteristics of modern Brazilian architecture, both as a design element - materialized in panels, murals and sculptures - and as a way of legitimizing national architecture in an expanded field, within the country and even internationally. It is currently prevailing the idea of integration between those fields from a homogenous root, not only aesthetic, discursive and poetic, but as part of the same professional circuit. It is in opposition to this synthesis of the arts supposedly anchored in a homogeneous root that the object of this research arises, the Itamaraty Palace, in Brasília, comprising the building itself, its gardens and works of art. The works of architectural integration allocated in the current headquarters of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs represent, in this context, an interesting and unique set. Conceived within a practically identical period of time (1965-1969), they come from artists of different generations and related to distinct groups, such as, for example: Bruno Giorgi, Mary Vieira, Franz Weissmann, Roberto Burle Marx, Alfredo Volpi, Athos Bulcão and Sérgio Camargo.Starting from this object, this research will debate the synthesis of the arts - in its tensions, discursive conflicts and professional disputes - and its several relations with the European vanguards, thus questioning the almost hegemonic idea of a unique sense to Brazilian modern, besides debating the frontier between the synthesis of the arts and the formulation of the modern museographic space.
