Abstract

The construction of Brasília raises important questions about the very foundation of Brazil\'s modern identity, especially in the fields of art and architecture. The relation between these two, the \"synthesis of the arts\", is one of the key aspects of Brazilian modern architecture, as it served to legitimate the country\'s architecture within its borders and abroad. According to Brazilian canon historiography, based on the aesthetic and narrative perspectives and the small number of artists/architects involved, the integration of the arts would have emerged from a supposedly homogeneous movement. This research focuses on one of the new national capital\'s buildings, the Itamaraty Palace, headquarters of the Ministry of External Relations, to try to challenge this almost undisputed view of homogeneity. Actually, the building, with its gardens and integrated art, seems to represent a unique ensemble: its almost 20 works of integrated art were commissioned practically within the same period (1965-1969) from artists of different generations and different artistic groups. From this peculiar object, this research will debate the synthesis - syntheses? - of the arts in the country and challenge the dominant view of one single movement of modern art and architecture in Brazil.
