Abstract

This research proposes to investigate the musiking of the carimbó from Pará and its relations with the universe of public policies, particularly the policies for cultural heritage, considering a specific case: the Santarém Novo's carimbó. Since 2003, during the construction of a national cultural policy, this small municipality located in the northwest of the Pará state has becomea production center of knowledge, heritage, militancy and political leadership in the cultural area. Due to the participatory nature of the underway national politics, the carimbó makers of Santarém Novo had the opportunity to participate in intense processes of circulation throughout the national territory, experiencing intense exchanges and discovering new knowledges. Drawing from the case of the musiking of this locality, I propose to explore the relations between "music" and "politics", considering the role of flows and displacements of people, knowledges and artefacts between this "local place" and other places of the "nation". What is the role of Santarém Novo's carimbó - the role of its musiking - in this displacement of people, and in the construction of networks of production, diffusion, research and militancy for the Brazilian popular culture? By dealing with this question, I hope to broaden the perceptions and the meanings of what is "musical", trying to understand how, in the considered case, it is related to the political. (AU)
