Abstract

Dystonia is a movement disorder characterized by involuntary muscular contractions, with a great impact on the quality of life. Its pathophysiology is not well understood, and some studies have shown cortical and pathological neuronal activity in the basal ganglia. Pale globe (PWG) deep brain stimulation (GIP) is an effective treatment in dystonias refractory to conventional drug treatments. The prospective effects of ECP on motor symptoms and especially on non-motors are scarce in the literature. Among non-motor symptoms, pain and neuropsychiatric disorders are prevalent, and can significantly affect patients' quality of life. The present study proposes to study the effects of ECP on motor and non-motor symptoms, focusing on the study of pain and non-painful sensory alterations through validated scales. Ten patients with refractory dystonia will participate in the study, and will be evaluated prospectively before and after six months of surgery. The analysis will be done before surgery and six months later with motor scales, pain, quantitative assessment of sensitivity and neuropsychiatric. The results will guide new research on the study of motor symptoms and non-motor disease, in addition to new therapeutic strategies. (AU)
