Abstract

There is a growing literature linking fertility and development. In some contexts, fertility distribution may become an important mechanism for the intergenerational propagation of socioeconomic inequalities. Thus, the proposal of this research project is to investigate the possible effects of fertility on the evolution of Brazil's socioeconomic inequality. The initial results of an exploratory analysis of the data pointed to a positive relation of these variables. Among the possible ways of estimating this relationship, we intend to explore the potential exogenous variation in fertility caused by climate change and the entry of Rede Globo into the Brazilian spatial context.
