Abstract

The study analyzes Nicota Bayeux's painting "Coeur Meurtri". The painting was purchased by the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo in 1913, it corresponds to one of the earliest acquisitions of the museum after its regulation in 1911, therefore, that was of historic importance for this institution.Using an analysis combining methodologies from the social history of art and sociology of art, as well as the contributions of feminist studies, this study aims to understand the aesthetic references of "Coeur Meurtri" and what is the relation of these references with the many journeys of the artist between Brazil, Europe and Algeria. The main hypothesis is that this painting has formal affinities with the Symbolist current, especially with the representation of the "decadent woman", so portrayed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
