Abstract

Clinical mastitis (CM) is the main reason for antimicrobial usage in dairy herds, as well as an important animal welfare concern. It has been demonstrated that 30 to 50% of CM cases result in no bacterial growth and do not require antimicrobial therapy. Thus, dairy farmers have used on-farm milk culturing systems, in which milk of all CM cases is plated on selective media with the aim of directing treatments. Cases that do not show microbial growth are not treated, drastically reducing (up to 60%) the use of antimicrobials. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of ketoprofen in on-farm culture programs, for cases that do not show bacterial growth, possibly resulting in reduction of the time to clinical cure and lower relapse rate after the case. Animals from 3 to 6 herds will be randomized into two experimental groups. One group will be treated with FM at the time of a culture negative result, and the other group will not receive any therapy. Relevant outcomes will be evaluated, such as clinical and microbiological cure rates, recurrence rates, time to clinical cure, time to return to the bulk tank, somatic cell count, and milk production. Results of this study could directly benefit farmers and animals by reducing the amount of discarded milk and improving the animals' welfare. (AU)
