Responsible use of antimicrobials and bacterial resistance in dairy herds

Abstract

The non-responsible use of antimicrobials (ATM) in human and veterinary medicine and animal production has been associated with increased antimicrobial resistance (AMR) worldwide. In dairy cattle, ATM therapy is the key strategy for treating infectious diseases, but the overuse of antimicrobials has been associated with increased AMR. To address this scientific and technological challenge, this proposal is organized into 5 subprojects, whose objectives are: 1) to evaluate the effect of selective treatment of CM on phenotypic and genotypic AMR of pathogens isolated from bulk tank milk from dairy herds;2) to evaluate the efficacy of direct tests of susceptibility to ATM in mastitis causative agents; 3) to evaluate the efficacy of OFC as a selection criterion for selective therapy of dry cows; 4) Development of machine-learning models based on MALDI-TOF (Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization Time-of-Light) results to detect antimicrobial resistance traits in bovine mastitis pathogens; 5) Evaluate the performance of MALDI-TOF for the rapid characterization of Methicillin-Resistant S. aureus (MRSA) and carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC) isolated from bovine mastitis. It is expected that the results from this proposal enable the monitoring bacterial resistance to ATM patterns in herds using on farm diagnostic tools and responsible use of ATM; and development of innovative products for use on the farm (direct tests of susceptibility to ATM and diagnosis for selective dry in cows) as an assisting tool of antimicrobial selection for CM treatment, as well as in ATM rational use in dairy production.
